What Does a Cold Air Intake Do?
To produce the energy required to run your car’s engine, you need fuel, oxygen, and a spark. Car intake systems deliver oxygen-rich air to the engine. These systems allow continuous airflow, offering consistent power and improved mileage. Cold air intake systems are more advanced forms. They bring cooler air into the combustion chamber, boosting power and efficiency further. Cold air is more oxygen-rich by volume than warm air. This means you can increase power while burning less fuel.
What Are the Parts of the Air Intake System?
Cold air intakes are set up by replacing the regular airbox with a metal or plastic tube that leads to an air filter. Cold air induction is made of three main parts: air filter, mass flow sensor, and throttle body.
Heat shields surround the air filter, keeping the airflow as cool as possible. Silicone boots connect the pieces. A mass flow sensor (not to be confused with the oxygen sensor for the exhaust) detects how much air enters the engine. The throttle body controls the air flowing through the sensor, thus affecting the engine’s combustion rate. As you step on the accelerator, the throttle plate opens, allowing airflow to the engine. As you release the accelerator, the throttle plate closes.
