Starters are motors powered by your Land Rover’s battery. When you turn on the ignition, the starter cranks the engine, setting it in motion. The main parts of the starter motor include the solenoid, armature, commutator, field coils, brushes, and the drive gear. Over time, any of these parts can wear out due to many reasons such as corrosion, oil leaks, and overheating.

Life Expectancy of a Starter Motor

On average, starter motors on most Land Rover models can last between 100,000 to 200,000 miles. In some cases, issues can be resolved without replacing the starter. These minor problems include loose connections or a defective solenoid.

Can You Drive With a Bad Starter Motor?

You can run your car with a bad starter motor, but it is highly unsafe to do so. Also, a bad starter can damage other parts of the starting system, such as the battery and alternator. When you’re on the road with a bad starter, you can end up being unable to turn on your car when it shuts down. And even if you do manage to start it, some faulty starters can draw too much power and drain the battery.

Other Reasons Your Land Rover Is Not Starting

Aside from a faulty starter motor, other startup failure causes include a dead battery, defective ignition switch, blockage in the fuel system, key fob malfunction, control module (ECM) issues, and electrical wiring issues.
